The future of German truck parking

According to estimates by various industry experts, there are between 30,000 and 50,000 truck parking spaces in Germany. Over the next four years, Germany will spend 100m euros a year on truck parking spaces. Will that be enough?

The lack of parking spaces, especially in transit country number 1 in Europe, is well known to every professional driver. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) is also aware of this problem. The ministry said it would spend 400m euros to create new truck parking spaces over the next four years. It also wants to rely on a telematics-based solution that has been in the testing phase for more than two years. We are talking about the so-called compact parking lot, which aims to make better use of the potential of existing facilities.

However, there are currently only three such systems – the Inntal-West rest area on the A93 motorway, the Jura-West rest area on the A3 and the Montabaur rest area on the A61.

Meanwhile, the German portal eurotransport.de, due to the lack of response from BMVI to the specific plans for parking infrastructure, decided to check how many parking spaces are actually available, how many will be missing in 2025 and how many will be created by the same year.

Here are the results of their investigation:
